International Road Safety Film Festival held on 11th January 2007 Organized by the Institute of Road Traffic Education in collaboration with Laser Europe

One of the most important means of creating awareness and effectively communicating road safety message is the visual media. Some of the Road Safety films have been very successful in creating an impact in the minds of the public. But most unfortunately these films are limited and not much investment is being made by various stakeholders in developing these effective tools.

A first World Road Safety Film Festival was held in Geneva under the auspices of the UNECE on 23 March 2006. In order to further promote the development of Road safety films, particularly in developing countries, the Institute of Road Traffic Education in collaboration with Laser Europe is organized an International Road Safety Film Festival on 11th January 2007. This film festival was a part of the International Workshop on Road Safety Education for Developing Countries. The film festival aimed to motivate inspire and facilitate the planning and implementation of road safety films, considering the important role which multimedia plays.

An eight member jury was constituted from amongst road safety experts, film maker, educationist, and media and from the ministry of transport. The jury selected four films as award winners, out of which two were in the Communication & Campaign category and two were in the Road Safety Education & Driver Training Category and two films were highly commended, both these were in the Road Safety Education & Driver Training Category.

The winning films were screened for the participating delegates of the International Workshop on 11th Jan. Awards for the winning films were presented on the evening of 12th January. The winning films will also be nominated to the Global Road Safety Film Festival organized by Laser Europe (France), in Paris/Geneva-2007/2008.
