 Message from
HRH Prince Michael of Kent GCVO
The awards demonstrate just what a wide range of initiatives contribute to this important cause. They recognize the professional esteem in which the winners are held. This aspect is what makes the awards unique and so highly regarded - the winners have been selected by other practicing professionals.
The reduction of child pedestrian casualties is a key area for all our work, but the true global significance of the importance of road safety especially in the area of child death and injury has yet to be embraced by governments in much of the developing world. These awards will do much to reinforce the need for action.
Although many of these awards are made to individuals, the key to real road safety success is teamwork; often these teams represent partnerships across some unusual disciplines, we must embrace the principle of partnership and think well beyond our normal limits to devise even clever ways of engaging key partners to deliver results.
I would also like to pay tribute to those who work for safer roads and to those associated with the awards scheme itself who have done so much in this important field.
I offer my personal congratulations to all our winners. |

Criteria for selection Road Safety Awards
Innovation: Innovation is one of the most important criteria in developing systems of road safety management especially in developing countries with mixed traffic conditions.. It does not necessarily imply that the particular activity must never have been practiced previously. Innovation can simply refer to a local initiative as well as to a brand new project.
Achievement: The other most important criteria. Essentially, no scheme or project should be recognised unless either there is a clear evidence of it having had a beneficial effect on road safety or it is of such a nature that no reasonable evaluation could be made of its impact.
Commitment: It is invariably the case that no initiative is likely to have a positive effect unless it is a committed initiative over a period of time. Thus, the judges look at evidence of long-term commitment, durability, and willingness to be involved over a period of years.
Well researched: It is important for any scheme to be based on a defined proposition, both in terms of the environment to be addressed and the message to be conveyed. There are many cases of well- intentioned schemes, which do not pass these tests.
Replicability: The project should be able to show interested professionals how particular initiatives have worked in reducing accidents. It is, therefore, an important criterion in terms of assessing eligibility.
Sustainability: It is necessary to ensure that even though the scheme is durable, it is adequately supported or financed to achieve its goals over the period set for it.
