Student Traffic Volunteer's scheme for the year 2007-2008

Induction of University Students to the Students Traffic Volunteers Scholarship Scheme 2007-2008

Information & Advertisement: Advertisements inviting applications were released in the leading national dailies in the first week of January 2007, these were further supported by posters displayed in all the prominent colleges of the city.

Selection & recruitment: 400 qualifying applications were received. An exhaustive interview was conducted for the students; the panel consisted of representatives from the IRTE, HMIL and the Delhi Traffic Police. 125 students were short listed at the end of the interview.

Training: Extensive one week training was imparted to the students in traffic management and control. Training included the understanding of : road traffic problems, causative factors of road accidents, traffic control devices, regulation of road traffic, post accident management ,vulnerable road users and traffic surveys. The students learned the hand signal drill as well as practical control of traffic at intersections. The training was conducted at the Traffic Police Lines, Teen Murti by the IRTE & Delhi Traffic Police.

Evaluation: On completion of the one week training written, oral, field and medical tests were conducted by a panel of members of the IRTE and Delhi Traffic Police.

Final selection: 110 students were selected after the training and evaluation process.


Induction Ceremony



110 students which included 13 girls and 97 boys were inducted to the STV Scheme by the Commissioner Police Dr. K. K. Paul, IPS, in the presence of Mr. Qamar Ahmed, IPS, Jt. Commissioner Police (Traffic) , Mr. M S Upadhye, IPS, Addl CP, Traffic, Mr. D S Jang, General Manager, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, Mr. B Mani , General manager, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, Mr. Rohit Baluja, President IRTE as well as Senior officers of the Delhi Police.



On arrival, the Police Commissioner witnessed the impressive traffic drill display by the students to the beats of the Police Band.

Mr. Baluja informed the gathering that the batch of stv’s being inducted today was the seventh batch of Student Traffic Volunteers being inducted under the stv’s scheme, conceptualised by IRTE in 1998, he said that it was a very proud moment for IRTE to see young boys and girls come forward wanting to do volunteer wor. The students received extensive training in the fundamentals of traffic management, which he said was as good as what a Traffic Police personnel receives.
Mr. Baluja also informed that each student will receive a stipend of Rs. 2000 per month to support them with their tuition fee/books etc.

The entire scheme including the students- stipend as well as their uniforms, insurance for students as well as the supervision costs are being gratefully sponsored by Hyundai Motor India Limited.






Mr. Jang began by thanking Delhi Traffic Police for their whole hearted support to the Student Traffic Volunteer Scheme for becoming a reality, he said that without their blessings such a scheme would not be pssible, he next thanked Mr. Baluja and IRTE for ensuring the smooth and effective running of the scheme, he felt proud and happy to be associated with the stv’s, he congratulated the students on their wonderful performance in 2006, he mentioned that not only did the students perform traffic duty they also put together excellent cultural programme on the occasion of the six month completion function and the closing ceremony of the scheme. Mr. Jang informed the gathering that, HMIL with the support of IRTE had finished training 100 University Students in the city of Chennai and that in the next few days a Hyundai traffic squad would be launched in Chennai too.













Dr. Paul congratulated the students on their drill performance, he lauded the efforts of IRTE in bringing forth the stv’s scheme and thanked Hyundai Motor India Limited for supporting such an initiative, which worked as a support to the mapower strapped traffic police and also supported the needy students financially.

























The students took a pledge in front of the Commissioner Police Dr. K. K. Paul.

        

I Student Volunteer” stv name” Today, on 22nd Feb 2007, In The Witness Of God, Solemnly Pledge That I Shall Always Uphold The Training Imparted To Me By IRTE and the Delhi traffic Police, With Complete Loyalty. I Shall Discharge My Duties Without Any Fear, Or Distinction And Always Strive To Educate The Indian Road User, About The Traffic Rules, That Have Been Laid Down For Our Safety On The Roads.


From 23rd February onwards the students have been deployed at the following important intersections of the city, they will contribute their time either during morning peak morning (8.30 am to 11.30 am) or evening peak hours (5.00 pm to 8.00 pm), for five days a week.
