1 Department of Traffic Engineering

The Traffic Engineering Department is perhaps the only research-
based training center, where the modules and tools and systems
of training are need-based and research-based. Road Safety
Engineers at this department are amongst transport and traffic
engineers and planners, accident investigators, forensic experts,
enforcement specialists, system managers, and IT professionals.

The department has been playing a key role in introducing
students to the algorithms of traffic and transport engineering,
understanding the risks road users face in their journeys on the
roads, road safety audits, highway asset management, traffic
psychology in planning road operations. Interestingly, the practical
study is based upon the risk audit of over 63,000 kms of national
and state highways and summary audits of 65 cities conducted by
the road safety engineers of IRTE.

IRTE's Mobile Crash Investigation & Research Laboratory is a key
tool and system through which students get an opportunity to learn
practical ways of audit and planning.

Students are exposed to different road environment needs, such
as urban areas, village roads, hill roads, those under construction
under different weather conditions.

The philosophy of 'Safe System Approach' is embedded in all
learning and practical modules.
Emphasis is given to practical learning and implementation so that
students are prepared to undertake all types of assignments such
as: consulting, audits, setting speed limits, managing roads and
highways, toll operations and ITS.
