Abstract

Establishing the identity of an individual is the most important aspect in forensic science. Individuals can be identified on the basis of occupational marks since, different professions leave their own traces. Occupational marks include callosities, prick marks, burns, scorched skin, skin diseases etc. These marks help to narrow down the search. A self-designed proforma and photographs were used in the current research work to examine and categorize the type and nature of occupational markings in two occupations namely, rickshaw pullers and tailors. Version 26 of Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) software was used to analyze the data. The results obtained show that occupational marks can be significantly helpful in establishing the identity. Majority of rickshaw pullers were found to possess occupational marks, in the form of callosities, on the anterior part of their hands. Additionally, the callosity was observed to be more prominent with increasing work experience. In case of tailors, callosities and prick marks were observed. Additionally, callosity formation on the hands of tailors were present on the posterior side. Moreover, it was observed that presence of callosity was dependent upon the type of scissors used.
