B.Sc. M.Sc. Forensic Science

INCEPTION OF THE PROGRAM

Building on 33 years of teaching and research experience, our progression to conduct degree programs and create qualified personnel in crime scene examination, scientific evidence analysis, and reliable investigations was the obvious step ahead. This transition supports national capacity-building efforts.

Recognising the need for skilled professionals to address the increasing crime rates and promote scientific temperament, CTM offers two full-time degree programs through its Department of Forensic Science. The program aims to prepare skilled professionals enthusiastic about learning and advancing in diverse forensic science fields, ultimately contributing to upholding justice in the courtroom.

From 2022, the College of Traffic Management offers a two-year M.Sc. Forensic Science program in affiliation with the National Forensic Sciences University. This year, another five-year integrated degree program has been introduced: B.Sc.-M.Sc. Forensic Science affiliated to NFSU in line with the new National Education Policy 2020.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

This B.Sc.-M.Sc. Forensic Science program (five-year integrated course) provides a unique, integrated academic pathway for applicants after their senior secondary school who kindle exploring the subject ab initio, from a robust foundation of undergraduate studies to the advanced techniques from the postgraduate education in forensic science. Students will engage in rigorous coursework and hands-on training across various forensic disciplines, including crime scene investigation and criminalistics, forensic biology, medicine, anthropology, and genomics, forensic chemistry and toxicology, and digital and cyber forensics.

The university’s mission is to develop professional, ethical graduates whose competence in problem-solving, legal analysis and application, quantitative reasoning, investigation and scientific laboratory procedures can be applied to immediate employment or advanced study. Additionally, our partnerships with law enforcement agencies, forensic laboratories, and other such organisations offer internships and collaborative projects, as these opportunities enhance practical exposure and provide valuable networking connections, opening doors to future employment.

OBJECTIVES

To establish a conducive environment for research across various domains of forensic and applied sciences, which nurtures the students’ minds, facilitating effective education, innovation and development.

ELIGIBILITY

Passed or appeared in 10+2 (or its equivalent) in Science, Physics/Chemistry/Biology/Mathematics with at least 60% for General/OBC/EWS category candidates and 55% or equivalent for SC/ST and PwD category candidates.

Fieldwork –

CTM offers fieldwork opportunities to students as an integral part of their curriculum allowing them to actively engage in real-time cases collaborating with Police officials, mobile forensic units and investigators. This helps the students visualise and learn strategies employed in court proceedings to present themselves as competent forensic experts providing testimony. They also acquire knowledge of the procedural aspects involved in conducting post-mortems. This is further described below:-

  • Police Departments – Students work with police departments and participate in investigations of real-time cases at crime scenes, working alongside skilled investigating officers.
  • Law Firms - They acquire insightful and practical knowledge of court proceedings with practising advocates and develop the necessary skills to serve as expert witnesses in a court of law.
  • NGOs- We collaborate with NGOs working on various crime-related issues, such as crimes against women, crimes against children, and child labour, providing students with the chance to explore the physiological and psychological challenges faced by victims and proactive forensic strategies.
  • Hospitals – This allows students to gain a deeper understanding of the complex medico-legal issues involved in investigating deaths and evaluating evidence of the cause and manner of death.
