Why driver training has become a pressing issue in India

IRTE 2020-09-10

Accident data reveals that over 80% of fatal and severe injury road accidents are on account of the driver's negligence. Hence, pushing the importance of driver training from trivial to urgent.

The question I want to raise is:

Whether the drivers are well trained and aware before they receive a permit to drive ( driver’s license)?

Are the drivers( bus drivers, auto and taxi drivers, personal drivers you employ, or you as a driver yourself) aware of the basic legislation, primarily the Motor Vehicles Driving Regulations, which form the very dharma of road usage?

Our legislation prescribes a comprehensive and detailed syllabus, which includes the driving theory, traffic education, understanding of traffic control devices, law and violations, defensive driving, vehicle mechanism and repairs, incident management and drivers’ duties and responsibilities. Furthermore, the law provides for a minimum driver training of 21 days for non-transport drivers.

With hefty fines, license cancellation and imprisonment, for violations which qualify for dangerous driving such as mobile phone usage, red-light jumping, violating stop signs amongst many others. Should the drivers only believe in bargaining with the police, or face an ambiguity to understand whether they actually violated or what was the precise reason for such a violation?

When your vehicle is involved in a road accident which involves serious injury or death, are you aware of your rights and responsibilities?

With an estimated 820  road deaths and 15,000 serious injuries happening every single day in India on account of road accidents, the probability of our involvement is very high, and therefore the importance of driver training has escalated as we need to invest time and effort to ensure that every driver under our responsibility is trained.

Just imagine:

It costs around 45-60 lakhs to become a pilot in India and this cost can go as high as 75 lakhs if you opt for a cadet program.

The lump-sum break up is 30-40 lakhs to obtain the commercial pilot license and 15-20 lakhs for the Type Rating.

A pilot carries 150 passengers on an average on a domestic flight

A bus driver also carries on an average 150  passengers on a single route journey, including those to embark enroute. Is the value of the human being the same in the aircraft and the bus? Should be!

What is the cost we incur to train ourselves when we drive, our be driven by our personal driver,  a bus driver, or a taxi driver or the auto-rickshaw in which you travel and handover your life to.

Nothing, perhaps a couple of thousand, we can get a license: Not more than ? 2,500 through a local driving school?

Consider the importance. Make no compromise. It is once in a lifetime that we offer ourselves for driver training.

The Department of Driver training at IRTE’s College of Traffic Management offers driver training (post-license training) to all stakeholders. Our training is offered all over the country.
